Texas won’t simply be filling a position after Monday’s announcement that Bubba Thornton is retiring as its men’s track and field coach. The athletic department actually is creating a new one.
The Longhorns will join the national trend by combining their men’s and women’s programs. According to statistics provided by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, of the 268 NCAA Division I schools with men’s and women’s track, all but 40 have combined programs.
