They’ve traveled the world following Formula One, and now Bill and his wife Chris Dean, both 63, will experience their first U.S. Grand Prix. We spotted them in downtown Austin strolling on Colorado Street and chatted with them about their 20-year passion for the sport, favorite drivers and how Austin food has won them over. They are already making plans to return in 2014.
Hometown: Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Number of races attended: About a dozen including Australia, Monaco, Belgium, Great Britain and Montreal. Favorite race? Monaco. “It’s magical,” Bill Dean says. They’ve picked races in different destinations and created vacations out of them, exploring each city at a leisurely pace.
Best food so far: Franklin Barbecue — they waited for two hours in line, but say it was worth it. “We’ve eaten so well on this trip,” Chris Dean says. Also on their foodie list? The Driskill Grill.
Looking forward to: Checking out Asleep at the Wheel at the “Best of Texas” at ACL Live and Fan Fest downtown. “The race is one big party,” Bill Dean says.
Favorite driver: Fernando Alonso of Spain. “He’s one of the greatest drivers ever,” Bill Dean says.
Why they love Formula One: “As soon as I hear the cars, it’s like music to my ears,” Bill Dean says. “It’s absolutely exciting, and I’ve never seen more nationalism than at a Grand Prix,” Chris Dean says.
