Texas decathlete Isaac Murphy’s hill to climb to repeat as champion in the event at the Texas Relays may not seem that high, but the competition that stands between Murphy and that goal this week is formidable.
Murphy, a senior from Harker Heights, is in third place after five events Wednesday at Mike A. Myers Stadium. He trails Duke’s Curtis Beach — who won the long jump and 400-meter dash — and Texas-Arlington’s Romain Martin, with the 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1,500-meter run still to go.
