Twenty-four and a half miles into the Livestrong Austin Marathon, Omar “Chuy” Martinez of the Boulder Track Club was a distant second — so far in back of the race officials’ lead vehicle that they couldn’t be sure anyone was actually running behind leader Jared Carson.
At the 25-mile mark, though, events took a dramatic turn. Carson, a 26-year-old from Smyrna, Ga., who was running his first marathon, started to fall apart, and Martinez — also making his marathon debut — closed hard for a stunning victory. Martinez’s winning time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, 9 seconds Sunday was the slowest in the race’s 21-year history.
