Ryan Brown and Courtney Schulte, the Lake Travis girls doubles tandem that won a Class 4A state title last year, now get a shot at a Class 5A state title Tuesday after wading through two hour-plus weather delays Monday at the UIL tennis state championships.
Schulte and Brown defeated Daniella Stillman and Caitlyn Resendiz of Harlingen South 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Lake Travis duo is familiar with their title-match counterparts, Princess Gbadamosi and Emily Oliver of Klein, whom they’ve faced three times — winning once and losing twice, including a defeat at a recent regional meet.
“Now it’s our turn,” Brown said.
Brown and Schulte were nervous while playing their first match Monday — a state quarterfinal — but they said the rain actually calmed them down.
“We felt pretty good going out there,” Schulte said. “The (quarterfinal) match we were really nervous, but this one we were really calm.”
Westlake’s mixed-doubles team of Casey Sutton and Nemo Niess also advanced to a state-title match.
Sutton, who won a state title in mixed doubles a season ago, and Niess picked up a straight-sets victory in the semifinals against Dustin Douglas and Shayne Cook of Abilene Cooper.
The Chaparrals will play Lucas and TJ Fumagalli of New Braunfels in the final Tuesday morning at Penick-Allison.
“I’ve been there last year so I know what to expect with all that,” Sutton said. “That’s always helpful … We’ve known each other since we were 6 years old, we know each other’s style, and the friendship helps out with everything.”
Fernanda Contreras and Meredith Hopson of Westlake both lost in the semifinals of girls singles.
Also at the Class 5A tournament, Westwood’s Miguel Alda reached the final in boys singles. After needing three sets to win his quarterfinal match, Alda defeated Belton’s Jacob Daugherty, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals.
In Class 4A girls singles, Vandegrift teammates Tyler Duncum and Shwetha Prabakar both lost their quarterfinal matches.
At the Class 3A state tournament in College Station, Sam San Marco of Wimberley dropped his semifinal match to Rayce Roberson of Abilene Wylie, 7-5, 6-1. San Marcos defeated Celina’s Austin Hoang, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Taylor’s Morgan Cmerek lost in 3A girls singles, falling to Autria Compton of Kilgore, 6-2, 6-2.
Lago Vista’s girls doubles team of Kelsey Mumford and Emily Wheeler advanced to the final at the Class 2A tournament, beating Godley’s Breanna Hunt and Callie Mantooth, 6-3, 6-1.
Florence’s Tristen Brunson lost in the semifinals of 2A girls singles, falling to Franklin’s Carrie Casey, 6-1, 6-3.
