Liberty Hill’s girls basketball team will play Mineral Wells on Friday in a Class 3A area playoff game, but that’s no surprise. At Liberty Hill, a second-round playoff game is a common occurrence.
The Lady Panthers have reached the postseason’s second round every year since 2003. In seven of those seasons, including this one, Liberty Hill received a first-round bye. Overall since 2003, the Lady Panthers are 19-10 in the postseason, reaching the state tournament in 2004 and 2012.
How does the Lady Panthers’ 11-year run stack up against the active streaks of some other Austin-area sports programs?
The volleyball teams at Westlake and Wimberley have reached the second round of the postseason in each of the past 16 years. LBJ’s boys basketball team can match Westlake and Wimberley’s feat with a bi-district victory over Vista Ridge next week.
Lake Travis’ girls soccer team has reached the second round of the playoffs in each of the past 14 seasons while Bowie’s softball team has advanced to the area round in each of the past 11 springs. Georgetown’s baseball team has moved past the bi-district playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
Leander and Wimberley’s football teams boast the area’s longest active streaks in that sport. The Lions and Texans have reached the second round of the playoffs in each of the past four seasons.
Cedar Park plans benefit: Cedar Park athletes will be flipping tires at Milburn Park on Saturday morning to raise money for a scholarship that will benefit the school’s athletic department.
The scholarship will honor Harold Horne, who died unexpectedly on Dec. 28. Horne, who produced many highlight videos for Austin-area football players, had a son, Zac, who played on Cedar Park’s football team from 2009-11. His oldest daughter, Haelee, was a two-time all-district selection as a member of the Lady Timberwolves’ volleyball team.
Information about the fundraiser can be found at www.sculpturetexas.com.
Under the radar: Each week, we’ll introduce you to a player who is making big plays despite not having a big name. This week, we’re taking a look at Anderson junior Mary Grace Bilby.
A 6-foot-3-inch post, Bilby has teamed with junior Saundra Guillory, an All-Central Texas honoree in 2012, and sophomore Kennedy Harris to form a productive nucleus for Anderson. Bilby is the Lady Trojans’ third-leading scorer (11.3 points per game), and she has averaged 8.3 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.
The Lady Trojans (25-8) have posted a 12-0 record since Dec. 28, the day head coach Katrina Hall’s husband, Alfred Wayne Hall, died unexpectedly at the age of 46. Katrinia Hall said her team was “playing inspired, together and with purpose.”
Where are they now?: Every week, we spotlight the collegiate athletic accomplishments of a few of our area alums. If you know of somebody who should be featured, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Houston senior swimmer Kimmy Ballo (Round Rock, 2009) is preparing for the Conference USA championships for the fourth time in her career. Another former Dragon — Bryn Lewis (Round Rock, 2009) — has North Texas’ best time in the 100-yard butterfly this season.
- Trinity University junior Arthur Daigh (Westwood, 2010) is set to compete in five individual events at this week’s Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference swimming championships in Rockwall. Daigh will be joined in two events — the 500-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle — by teammate Lucas Belury (Westlake, 2010).
