Haley Mahlum, senior, outside hitter, Lake Travis
With Lake Travis enjoying such great success in several sports, is there extra pressure for volleyball to succeed as well?
Yes, but that’s what makes us better. We have traditions to uphold, and the pressure will only make us want to excel even more.
Has volleyball taught you any lessons you use in daily life?
For sure. It has taught me how to work better with the people around me and to set goals for myself and hold myself accountable.
What are your expectations for your team?
All 13 of us play to win. We get in the gym every day ready to improve. Our expectations are to be district champions and work hard to win every playoff game in order to make it to the state tournament.
Tell me about your college plans.
I am still keeping all of my options open for college and have not yet decided what my future holds. I plan to study something in the medical field, maybe physical therapy or nursing.
If you could have dinner with any four people in the history of the world, who would they be?
My grandpa Lars, Jesus, Kerri Walsh and Carrie Underwood.
Why grandpa Lars?
He passed away before I was born, and I would love to have the opportunity to meet the man I hear so much about.
If you had the choice of being valedictorian of your class or all-state in volleyball, which would you choose?
I would choose to be all-state in volleyball because I can still be a great student and have a solid balance between academics and athletics.
What is your favorite high school memory in volleyball?
Winning the state championship as a sophomore in 2011 was an experience that I will always cherish and remember. I had amazing teammates who taught me so much.
Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know.
I’m left-handed but play all sports with my right hand.
If you bought a car that best matched your personality, what would it be?
A Jeep. I like the outdoors and I’m also adventurous.
Do you have any pre-match rituals?
Before every home game, the varsity comes into the locker room and we have a dance party in the dark with strobe lights. It helps us get rid of our butterflies and loosen up before the match.
If you could see any music concert, what would it be?
I would love to see Mumford and Sons again in concert. They are the most-talented musicians I have ever seen, and I absolutely love their music.
