Despite missing their star setter, Round Rock’s volleyball team rolled to the Fraulein Volleyfest title this past weekend in New Braunfels, defeating A&M Consolidated 25-22, 25-23 in the final.
The Dragons (13-4) won eight of nine matches while topping the Gold Division field. Lauren Taft, a 5-foot-10-inch senior, recorded 15 kills in the final for the Dragons, who remained without senior setter Stephanie Aiple, a Texas A&M recruit. Sierra Moses and Hannah Vaughn have filled in capably for Aiple, who underwent back surgery in July.
“Lauren was just incredible — great arm swing and excellent placement,” Round Rock coach Diane Watson said. “I am incredibly proud of the job the girls did.”
Taft and teammate Madison King, a senior outside hitter, were named to the all-tournament squad.
Watson said Aiple was cleared to begin practice this week. She is expected to return for Round Rock’s district opener against Stony Point on Sept. 13.
Dripping Springs (13-5) entered the tournament as the top seed, but the Tigers fell to San Antonio O’Connor 25-23, 17-25, 19-25 in the Gold Division quarterfinals. Dripping Springs, which starts as many as four sophomores, came back to beat New Braunfels Canyon (25-17, 27-25) and Vista Ridge (24-26, 25-9, 25-21) to win the consolation title. Tigers Morgyn Greer and Meghan Bettis were all-tournament selections.
Westlake finished fourth in the Gold Division bracket after defeating Lake Travis in the quarterfinals.
Corinne Grandcolas of Westlake was an all-tournament pick, as were Haley Mahlum of Lake Travis and Rachel Neblett of Vista Ridge. They were joined on the squad by Hailey Stout and Karina Robinson of Westwood and Megan Slan and Autumn Lockley of Leander.
