Austin-area schools sent plenty of athletes up to the medal stand this past weekend, when the UIL and TAPPS held their annual state track and field meets.
Led by two-medal performances apiece from Rouse’s Madie Boreman, McNeil’s Judy Emeodi, Bastrop’s Antwuan Davis and Taylor’s Fred Kerley, area athletes won 17 medals at the University Interscholastic League meet. It was the area’s best showing since a 27-medal performance in 2004. At the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools meet in Waco, Austin-area competitors secured 33 medals.

Five Austin-area baseball teams remain in the University Interscholastic League playoffs. With the regional quarterfinals set to begin Thursday, here’s a quick look at the final five:
Round Rock: Fueled by All-Central Texas shoo-in Kirby McGuire and the pitching of Chris Falwell and Blake Winfrey, the Dragons have reached the third round of the playoffs for the second straight season. Waiting for Round Rock is The Woodlands, the top-ranked team in the Class 5A poll compiled by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.
Hays: The Rebels have performed well under David Null, who took over the program in the off-season. Hays won a share of the District 27-4A championship this spring, and the Rebels have won their three playoff games by the combined score of 27-10.
Georgetown: Led by seven Eagles who also played on the football team that reached the Class 4A, Division I championship game in December, Georgetown is 27-8 this spring. The Eagles have trailed only once in the postseason and that two-run deficit lasted for less than an inning.
Liberty Hill: The only Class 3A team on this list, the Panthers will play Kennedale this weekend. As the champions of District 8-3A, Liberty Hill received a bi-district round bye before sweeping Fort Worth Castleberry in a best-of-three area-round series.
Thrall: A regional quarterfinalist for the third straight season, Thrall will try to reach the regional semifinals for the first time since 1998. The Tigers won’t have to search far for a scouting report on Weimar; the Wildcats knocked off Thrall’s rival Thorndale in the area round of the playoffs.
