Postseason Game of the Week: Westlake (11-2) vs. Lake Travis (12-1)

POSTSEASON GAME OF THE WEEK

Class 6A, Division I state quarterfinal

Westlake (11-2) vs. Lake Travis (12-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday, Reeves Athletic Complex

Quarterbacks: After a subpar game against Converse Judson on Nov. 18, Westlake senior Sam Ehlinger appeared to be fully recovered from October thumb surgery in his team’s victory over Laredo United on Saturday, when he completed 16 of 22 passes for 203 yards and a pair of TDs. Lake Travis senior Charlie Brewer has been nearly flawless this season, passing for 42 touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 77 percent of his passes. Edge: Lake Travis.

Other offense: Westlake played without RB Nakia Watson in its previous matchup against Lake Travis on Oct. 7, when the Cavaliers won 49-7. The combination of Watson (1,542 yards, 22 TDs) and WR Andrew Boykin (62 catches, 1,031 yards, 13 TDs) has helped the Chaparrals run off six straight wins.Lake Travis counters with RB Maleek Barkley (1,167 yards, 16 TDs) and receivers Cade Brewer, Cade Green and Garrett Wilson, who have combined for 30 TD receptions. Edge: Lake Travis.

Defense: After the blowout loss to Lake Travis, Westlake’s defense allowed a total of nine points over the next four games, and LB Levi Jones (100 tackles, 12 for losses) and CB Cary Andreo (four INTs, seven pass breakups) have helped the Chaparrals limit their three playoff opponents to 39 total points. After yielding a combined 91 points in the first two games of this season, the Cavaliers have given up a total of 80 in the next 11 contests, led by LB Mateo Lopez (121 tackles), LB William Lisenby (86 tackles) and FS Austin Hiller (89 tackles). Edge: Westlake.

Special teams: Westlake’s Mauro Montemayor has hit on 9 of 11 field-goal attempts this fall, with his long being a 30-yarder. All-state kicker Cameron Dicker has connected on 9 of 12 field-goal tries for Lake Travis, including a 46-yarder. Edge: even.

Intangibles: Westlake, humbled by the Cavaliers in that 42-point loss in October, has waited two months for the rematch. Lake Travis has won nine straight games against its nearby rival. Edge: Lake Travis.
