The safe, serene scene at Westlake drew Beard to the southwest Austin school, he said. This past summer, he left behind his mother, siblings and home in a west-side Chicago neighborhood where guns, gangs and random violence were rampant. To protect himself there, Beard said, he carried a nine-millimeter pistol to Orr Academy High School, and he estimated that a third of the students there owned handguns.
