Derrick Hayes, a junior sprinter from Columbus High School, could have competed at this week’s UIL state track meet, but a lapse in judgment cost him, his relay teammates and the town of about 3,700 big time.
In case you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard, Hayes — the anchor for Columbus’ 400-meter relay team — crossed the finish line first at the Region IV-3A meet in Kingsville, assuring the relay one of eight coveted spots at the state meet.
