The wait is over, Longhorns fans.
Time Warner Cable announced late Friday afternoon that it had picked up the Longhorn Network, two years after its launch.
Terms of the agreement weren’t released. The sticking point preventing an earlier deal had reportedly been the amount of money being sought by ESPN, which runs LHN as part of a 20-year, $300 million pact with the University of Texas.
Time Warner Cable customers in the Austin area who have expanded basic cable can find LHN on Channel 444 in standard definition and on Channel 1593 in high definition.
The network will also be available to Time Warner Cable customers elsewhere across the state, including in Dallas, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio and Waco.
The deal comes just in time for Saturday’s UT-New Mexico State game, which is set to air exclusively on LHN.
In Central Texas, Time Warner Cable joins San Marcos-based Grande Communications and AT&T U-verse in offering the network. Carriers elsewhere across the country that offer LHN include Charter Communications, Cox Communications, Google Fiber and Verizon FiOS.
“We are extremely pleased to have reached an agreement with Time Warner Cable in time for college football,” David Preschlack, executive vice president of Disney and ESPN Media Networks, said in a statement. “This deal will better serve UT fans in the greater Austin area and Texas statewide.”
The announcement marks a dramatic reversal in negotiations between ESPN and Time Warner Cable. As recently as last week, a high-ranking executive with ESPN told the American-Statesman a deal with Time Warner Cable wasn’t imminent.
”We’re really excited to have reached an agreement that brings Longhorn Network’s programming to Time Warner Cable,” said Andrew Rosenberg, senior vice president of content acquisition for Time Warner Cable. “We know we count a lot of UT fans among our customers, and we’ve worked hard with our colleagues at ESPN to finalize an agreement in time to bring them Saturday’s game.”
In addition to the UT-New Mexico State game, LHN is set to carry two other games exclusively: Ole Miss on Sept. 14 and Kansas on Nov. 2. It will also air a simulcast of the Sept. 7 Texas-BYU matchup.
Other exclusive LHN offerings this season will include 23 UT soccer and volleyball matches.
