Case McCoy hit 14 of his first 16 passes in the early going to give the Horns a legitimate shot to beat the Rebels. He added a 13-yard touchdown pass to Mike Davis to get the Horns on the board in the first quarter.
Bo Wallace led the Rebels on drives of 80 and 81 yards in the third quarter to spur Ole Miss’ 23-0 pivotal run, including a spinning 15-yard touchdown run.
The Texas defense opened the game as if if never left Provo. The Horns surrendered 132 yards on the first 16 plays and trailed 14-0 less than seven minutes into the game before they finally got some stops. Too bad it didn’t last. The Horns gave up 40-plus points for the second straight week.
The Horns blew a great chance to go up by double digits in the second quarter with a first-and-goal at the Ole Miss two-yard line, but consecutive false starts by Dominic Espinosa and Geoff Swaim pushed them back. Texas settled for a field goal.
Play of the Game
Offense: It came on special teams but it was by an offensive player. Jeff Scott gave the Rebels some breathing room with a spectacular 73-yard punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter, breaking two tackles before he burst into the open.
Defense: The Horns earned a rare three-and-out early in the fourth quarter to put Texas in business at the Ole Miss 46-yard line.
