A review of University of Texas salary records revealed that Major Applewhite, Texas’ co-offensive coordinator who as an assistant football coach was disciplined in 2009 for an inappropriate relationship, received $15,000 in bonuses and supplemental pay that same year, but the extra money already had been guaranteed to him when he was hired the year before.
Applewhite also didn’t receive a merit raise in his base pay for 20 months, records showed. When Texas men’s athletic director DeLoss Dodds acknowledged Applewhite’s inappropriate relationship last month — four years after it happened — he said that Applewhite’s salary had been frozen then for 11 months.
The salary information was obtained Thursday by the American-Statesman through the Texas Open Records Act.
Applewhite was disciplined in February 2009, after he admitted to a brief relationship with a student trainer who was not under his supervision. The information regarding Applewhite was released about a month after Bev Kearney, Texas’ women’s track coach, was forced to resign after the school learned of a consensual relationship she had had with a student-athlete from 2002-03.
Starting in January 2009, Applewhite’s base salary was $245,000 — or $20,417 a month. His salary history showed that he was paid each month in 2009. In addition, he received $5,000 payments in June, July and November 2009.
Nick Voinis, a Texas athletic department spokesman, said Thursday those payments were for speaking fees and working the summer camps for coach Mack Brown. All assistant coaches have pay supplements for camp and speaking fees.
The document shows Applewhite’s next merit raise came in September 2010, when his monthly base salary increased to $21,209 per month. For 2010, Applewhite was paid $264,283. In all years but 2010, Applewhite received an increase in base salary in January.
By January 2011, when Applewhite was promoted to co-offensive coordinator, his base salary increased to $450,000. His supplemental pay was worth an additional $50,000.
Last year, his base salary was $525,000, plus three payments worth a total of $50,000.
Records show that his base for 2013 is $600,000.
