LONGHORNS FOOTBALL: OFFSEASON TIMELINE
News-worthy happenings around Texas football, since the Longhorns’ 31-27 win over Oregon State in the Alamo Bowl:
Jan. 2: A new coach. Larry Porter is named running backs coach, replacing Major Applewhite, who had moved into the play-calling co-coordinator and quarterbacks coaching roles after Bryan Harsin took the head coaching job at Arkansas State.
Jan. 10: He’s baaack. After earlier indicating he would leave for the NFL, wide receiver Mike Davis issues a statement that he’ll return for his senior season.
Jan. 11: But he’s not. Junior defensive tackle Brandon Moore announces he will enter the NFL Draft. Three months later, he ends up not getting drafted and ends up signing as a free agent with the Chargers.
Jan. 13: Hicks, McCoy return. Coach Mack Brown announces linebacker Jordan Hicks and quarterback Case McCoy are reinstated to the team after being suspended for the Alamo Bowl for violating curfew, in conjunction with an assault investigation in San Antonio that resulted in no arrests. Texas also announces three fifth-year seniors — guard Thomas Ashcraft, tight end Trey Graham and defensive tackle Kyle Kriegel — had given up their eligibility to “prepare for their futures,” and that newcomers Geoff Swaim, Deoundrei Davis, Jake Raulerson and Tyrone Swoopes had enrolled at mid-term.
Feb. 1: Major problems. Texas releases a statement that Major Applewhite “engaged in inappropriate, consensual behavior” with an adult student trainer at the 2009 Fiesta Bowl.
Feb. 2: Brewer arrested. Quarterback Connor Brewer is arrested on Class C misdemeanor charges of public intoxication and possessing a fake driver’s license.
Feb. 6: Signing day. Texas formally signs a 15-member recruiting class for 2013. The class ranks 17th nationally, according to 247Sports.
Feb. 27: Cochran injured. Josh Cochran, who has started the last two seasons at left and right tackle, breaks a bone in his lower left leg. He goes on to miss spring practice.
March 7: From Bama to Texas. Patrick Suddes is hired from Alabama for the Longhorns’ newly created job of director of player personnel.
March 11: Jackson surgery. Linebacker Tevin Jackson undergoes successful surgery for a dislocated right shoulder.
March 12: Jones charged. Wide receiver Cayleb Jones is charged with aggravated assault stemming from a February incident when police said he threw a punch that broke the jaw of a UT tennis player. The charge later was reduced to a misdemeanor.
April 6: Sanders arrested. Wide receiver Kendall Sanders is arrested on DWI charges in College Station.
April 22: Another Shipley. Veteran high school coach Bob Shipley, father of current and former Longhorns receivers Jaxon and Jordan Shipley, is hired as a football analyst for the new scouting department.
April 25-27: Draft daze. In the NFL draft, safety Kenny Vaccaro is taken by New Orleans with the 15th overall pick. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin gets chosen by Buffalo in the third round, and defensive end Alex Okafor goes to Arizona in the fourth round.
June 3: Suspensions. Brown announces that Jones (see March 12) and Sanders (April 6) will be suspended for the season opener. He also says tackle Garrett Greenlea will be placed on a medical scholarship.
June 17: Boyer honored. Deep snapper Nate Boyer, who served in the Army Special Forces for six years, is named one of the Big 12’s two Sportsperson of the Year honorees. Boyer was deployed to Afghanistan over the summer with the National Guard.
July 9: Brewer leaves. Backup quarterback Connor Brewer, battling Tyrone Swoopes for the No. 3 quarterback spot, announces he will transfer out of the Texas program.
July 17: Robinson returns. Greg Robinson, the Longhorns’ co-defensive coordinator in 2004, is hired as an analyst in the scouting department.
July 19: Injuries. Texas announces that cornerback Quandre Diggs, receiver Jaxon Shipley and safety Josh Turner (all with hip issues), wide receiver Mike Davis (hernia surgery) and linebacker Demarco Cobbs (knee surgery) all will be either limited or out (in Cobbs’ case) for the start of preseason camp, but should be OK by the season opener. UT also says Cochran, Jackson, Trey Hopkins and Jackson Jeffcoat have been cleared for full participation.
July 24: Jones leaves. The Longhorns issue a release that Cayleb Jones will transfer. No destination school is announced.
July 29: ‘Zona bound. Nearly three weeks after he announced he’s leaving, Connor Brewer tweets he’ll return to his home state and enroll at the University of Arizona.
