1. A tearful goodbye to David Krueger, an outstanding baseball coach with two state titles and a runner-up finish as well as a 44-game district winning streak, a terrific history teacher and an even better all-around person at my alma mater, Taylor High School. Krueger, a youthful 72, died last week after quintuple heart bypass surgery. He had a rare passion for baseball. His brother Dan still remembers as a 6-year-old when David, 10 years his senior, wouldn’t let Dan watch cartoons, switched the black-and-white television to baseball and locked Dan out of the house. He was as shy and humble as they come and was known for his ability to connect with his students. The Ducks’ baseball field was named for him in 1989. We’ll always keep a piece of him in our hearts.
