While I got ya, here are nine things, one crazy prediction and heartfelt thanks and a debt of gratitude to editors, colleagues, family and friends on my 40th anniversary at the Statesman:
1. There’s still no movement in the Longhorn Network’s search to reach an agreement with Time Warner Cable, and none is expected until negotiations with carriers for the upcoming SEC Network get serious and give ESPN stronger leverage. But two highly placed sources familiar with talks between ESPN and distributors say there’s a strong likelihood the LHN could sign a deal with Dish network before next college football season because the third-largest pay TV provider’s current contract with ESPN expires in September. Talks have begun. ESPN might try to make nice with the network with 14 million subscribers after winning in February most of a lawsuit Dish filed against it — ESPN had to pay $4.9 million; Dish sought $152 million — alleging ESPN gave lower rates to other distributors.
