1. Augie Garrido is not contemplating retiring even though 5-10 Texas has hit a lowly .230 in its last three series (its opponent has hit only .209) and dropped all three, this time to West Virginia. The 74-year-old coach’s baseball team will probably not make the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. But it’s not his age; it’s his recruiting. “I’m sure as hell not going out a loser,” he told me Sunday. “I’ve been through this six times, three of them here. You’re never going to have to fire me. I know when I’m done, and this isn’t it. But I agree with anyone who says this is not acceptable.”
