While I got ya, here are nine things and one crazy prediction:
1. Where’s Tyrone Swoopes? Mack Brown has been saying for three weeks that he planned to play the true freshman quarterback, and three straight games, Swoopes hasn’t left the bench. Besides damaging his credibility, Mack isn’t doing his team any favors. It’s inexcusable and inexplicable that he hasn’t used him. With David Ash ruled out for the Oklahoma game and maybe longer, Texas has one quarterback who has ever thrown a college pass. If Case McCoy goes down, Mack might as well let Johnathan Gray or Jalen Overstreet take every snap out of the Wild formation. Some insiders say Overstreet is not an option because he’s not a polished passer, but neither is Swoopes. It’s plain crazy that Texas didn’t insert Swoopes in the Iowa State game during the first half, especially with a 10-0 lead. What’s to lose? Mack was guilty of the same in 2009 when he refused to give Garrett Gilbert meaningful snaps during the regular season because Texas was trying to win Colt McCoy the Heisman. If Swoopes does redshirt and Ash’s career is over because of concussions and Denton Guyer’s Jerrod Heard is the only new quarterback recruit, Mack — or a new coach — will not have a quarterback in 2014 who has ever taken a snap. But McCoy is being more efficient and has thrown 106 consecutive passes without an interception, so there’s that.
