6:45 p.m. update: Rain is beginning to fall in the Austin metro area.
The majority of the storm clouds in the area have formed in Hays County, though those storms are moving slowly north, and a few scattered showers are also popping up in different areas of Travis County.
There is a 60 percent chance of rain for the rest of the night Friday and until 5 a.m. Saturday morning.
Track the storms using the American-Statesman’s weather radar.
2:45 p.m. update: A low chance of light freezing rain is possible for northern parts of the Hill Country late Saturday and early Sunday, the National Weather Service said Friday afternoon.
If light icing happens on elevated surfaces, such as bridges and overpasses, could make driving hazardous, forecasters said.
But temperatures in the Hill Country are expected to rise above freezing later Sunday morning.
Friday forecast for Austin: Cloudy skies, a high of 67 and south winds moving 5 to 10 mph are in store for Central Texas during the day. Then the weekend could be off to a gray start with a 30 percent chance of rain Friday night, cloudy skies, a low of 57 and south winds moving 5 mph, the National Weather Service said.
The weather service’s extended forecast calls for an overcast weekend with more scattered showers likely into next week as well. A cold front early Sunday will send Austin-area temperatures plummeting into the 30s overnight into early Monday:
Saturday: 20 percent chance of rain before noon, otherwise cloudy, high of 68 and south winds moving 5 mph becoming east southeast in the afternoon; 20 percent chance of rain, mostly cloudy, low of 39 and north winds moving 5 to 10 mph at night.
Sunday: 40 percent chance of rain, otherwise mostly cloudy, high of 45 and north winds moving 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph; partly cloudy, low of 33 and north winds moving 10 to 15 mph at night.
Monday: Mostly sunny, high of 56 and north winds moving 5 to 10 mph and becoming east in the afternoon; mostly cloudy, low of 46 and east southeast winds moving 5 mph at night.
