Pope Francis sends condolences to Texas church shooting victims

Pope Francis sent condolences to the families of those killed and injured in Sunday’s shooting at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church was “deeply grieved by news of the loss of life and grave injuries caused by the act of senseless violence,” according to a telegram sent to Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller of San Antonio, Vatican Radio reported Tuesday.

The pope asked Garcia-Siller “to convey his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and the wounded, to the members of the congregation, and to the entire local community,” said the telegram from Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.

Parolin added that the pope was praying to console “all who mourn and to grant them the spiritual strength that triumphs over violence and hatred by the power of forgiveness, hope and reconciling love.”
