Viewpoints: DA’s oversight of police shootings must earn public trust


The editorial board welcomes Travis County District Attorney Margaret Moore’s steps to bring more transparency to investigations and oversight of police shooting cases, just as we applaud any efforts to make government more open.

However, we would have preferred that Moore use an independent prosecutor in these cases, as we have called for in the past. Because they address perceptions of blurred lines between prosecutors and police, independent prosecutors have proved to be a viable tool in police shooting cases nationally.
