Every day that U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz remain silent while Trump obliterates our standing in the world is an indictment of their governing cowardice. Actions that will hurt Texas — such as repealing NAFTA, and throwing so-called dreamers out of the country — draw no pushback from those who should represent the interests of all Texans. And now, hideously racist and irredeemable sentiments from Trump are met with complicit silence.
Meanwhile, our country’s standing in the world drops by the day. Our allies and international friends are appalled by degradation of the standards and lodestar values which the United States represented. China will lap us economically; the neediest among us will suffer; and the ruling political class stuffs its pockets with money and whistles past the graveyard of our reputation and global influence.
It is deeply disappointing that the Republican senators from Texas will not stand up. I guess the money is worth it.

My father came from a “shithole country.” My dad escaped the Holocaust and hatred and arrived in the United States with no money, no education and did not speak English.
Fortunately, the hope and beauty of the United States allowed my dad to survive, escape poverty, join the Air Force, become a Fortune 500 vice president and make sure his sons received the education he never had. President Trump, you are completely unfamiliar with what makes America truly great and the genius and heart of this country.
Former presidents — Republicans and Democrats — understood and protected the wonder and dignity of this country. You demean and disrespect this great nation. We patriots from “shitholes” who arrived here from all over the world will not stand for it.
ERIC GALTON, AUSTIN
Let’s all recognize that taking the majority away from Republicans in Congress and state legislatures is the most important goal of the midterm congressional and state elections.
The only way to do this is for the Democrats and other political parties to unify for that single purpose, putting aside differences for a higher purpose. A vocal minority has purloined our elected bodies to further their own beliefs, and desires, upon the rest of us.
Regarding local elections, the way to maintain true local control is to refuse to recognize party affiliation for elections below the state level. Then our local elected officials won’t be beholden to some party agenda imposed from above their level.

It is unconscionable that Congress has taken no action to extend the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. Both programs affect children in this country. There are all kinds of legislative actions taken by conservative lawmakers to protect the preborn but little to help those already born.
CHIP provides health insurance to those qualified up to age 18. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that extending this program saves $3.8 billion from the federal deficit. The program began in 1997 and is effective in keeping the nation’s children healthy.
DACA allows children brought to this country under circumstances beyond their control to stay here with a path to a green card if qualified. Many are college graduates, pay taxes and contribute to society.
Congress, do what’s right. Pass legislation to protect our nation’s children and young people.

It’s hard to even imagine any plan that takes precious public land along the Auditorium Shores space and in any way accommodates a professional sports stadium or public parking. Future generations will be hard-pressed to understand how Austin’s version of New York’s Central Park was traded away. Shame of the City Council for even considering this!
JAMES K. GEORGE JR., AUSTIN
Every day our disgusting morally bankrupt president of the United States of America Donald Trump out-Trumps himself with language so vile and racist it rates XXX. My children and grandchildren will never be allowed to hear this misogynist, racist pig in our house.
His disgusting bragging about how he can grab females’ private parts with impunity should have landed him in jail. “Trump” is a new word in our lexicon. As to not insult pigs we will call “Trump” what it is.

Whereas, in 1988, the U.S. Congress passed the McKinney Act to help people experiencing homelessness declaring that homelessness had reached a crisis level in this nation, and
Whereas, tens of thousands of people and families end up homeless on the streets of America every year, and
Whereas, due to the lack of affordable housing through traditional means, people continue to remain un-housed for many years, and
Whereas, periodic natural catastrophes render many families and individuals without housing, and
Whereas, the Federal Government through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, already activates tremendous amounts of resources to help people during these declared disasters,
Therefore be it resolved, that anyone, or any family, that presents themselves to be homeless within the impacted area should be able to avail themselves to all resources offered in all forms, including housing.
