‘Dancing with the Stars’ voters save Rick Perry

Despite finishing in last place in the first two weeks of the ABC reality TV show, Rick Perry was spared a Texas-sized boot on Tuesday night thanks to support from viewers.

The combined scored from the judges for Perry and his partner, Emma Slater, over two weeks: 42 out of 80 possible points. But it didn’t matter.

Perry and Slater were among the first two couples saved from elimination on Tuesday night. What they lost on the dance floor, they gained in Perry’s apparently still active get-out-the-vote operation.

Judge Julianne Hough said that success on the show depends as much on dancing as it does on what America wants.

“Based on scores, Rick and Emma, they were the lowest. But I think that’s what this competition is about,” Hough said. “I think it also doesn’t hurt that Rick has Emma, who’s pretty fantastic.”
