As a relatively new transplant to Austin and former bike commuter, I’ve been shocked and saddened by the number of bicyclists injured or killed by motorists on the road in this great city. At first I wondered why this is the case. I was reading American-Statesman articles and talking to friends about the tragic epidemic.
Then, I was driving to work one morning and almost hit a bicyclist on South First Street in the right lane, near the Texas School for the Deaf. The sun had not yet risen, and there is no bike lane in that area. On top of all of this, the bicyclist thought it was smart to ride their bike with no reflectors/lights on their bike whatsoever, during morning rush hour.
