Higher traffic, lower toll
Users of MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) definitely need help, and here’s a suggestion for a better way to toll the new lane: Raising the toll when traffic is highest on the free lanes sounds too much like Dallas. The proper Austin way would be to reduce the toll when traffic is highest. That would attract more users and reduce the crowding on the free lanes. It seems like the least we could do, since the free lanes are scheduled to lose some width and be even more terrifying than they are now. As for trying to provide revenue to pay for the project: more cars paying a lower rate could raise as much money in tolls as a few cars paying a high rate. We don’t need a Lexus lane!
