Killing the government
Forty years ago, National Lampoon humor magazine ran a cover picture of a dog with a gun pointed at its head, captioned “Buy this magazine or we’ll shoot this dog.” Apparently, the GOP has re-visualized that cover as legislative strategy, substituting the federal government for the dog. Unfortunately for us, it’s not satire now, and it sure isn’t funny. Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw: It’s not the economy, stupid; it’s the Republicans and the Democrats.

The Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission released a rough draft of proposed Austin City Council districts Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday’s editorial — written Tuesday — was critical of the commission’s reluctance to release the draft map at a Saturday hearing.
