Let women decide
The building blocks of a fetus are its mother’s cells; all cell bodies’ DNA is maternal. The father’s sperm partly “shapes” the future child, but the fetus is 100 percent built and nourished by the mother. Only at the end of a pregnancy does a fetus have organized brain structures that may support primitive feelings.
Movements do not indicate feelings. Females naturally produce much more than two offspring. Humans are designed to lose many embryos and fetuses (spontaneous abortions). The world could not support all humans if there would not have been billions of abortions, epidemics and wars.
If men would have to bear children, there would be no abortion debate. Women must decide when abortions are ethical. It is a female strength to be pragmatic and compassionate. Legislators must not practice medicine, nor theology. Religion and politics must stay separate.
Cut federal pay at top
It is about time the military took a cut at the top. This suggests that President Barack Obama directs all of his Cabinet to do the same. This is one way to cut the budget without cutting services. If he will not, then we will know who is important.
Act on climate change
Re: July 21 article, “Nature, or error?”
Hurrah to the American-Statesman for this latest piece on our dwindling water supply. I was especially grateful that it quoted LCRA General Manager Becky Motal on the bigger picture behind the drought: climate change. As she said: “The drought may be the window into the future.” Indeed it is, as any climate scientist will tell you.
It is high time for legislative action on climate change. I urge everyone to write a letter to your senators and your representative today, asking them to enact a carbon tax, pricing fossil fuels according to the amount of carbon they release. We all have a responsibility to future generations to create the political will for a stable climate. We must do this because, wise as our elected officials may be, they do not create political will. They simply respond to it.
Obama fueling unrest
It is becoming more and more evident that President Barack Obama and his faithful followers have seized the Trayvon Martin tragedy to promote their gun control agenda and to further divide the country. Our president will not call for peace in the aftermath of the upheaval that the Rev. Al Sharpton is demanding. Instead, Obama brings race into the discussion when it is only a product of radical liberals.
What Obama really wants is a lot of unrest since it helps his overall goal, which is turning the American public on each other so he can gain more power.
Simplistic gun column
Re.: July 20 commentary, “For Zimmerman Nation, safety is implicity in a gun.”
John Young’s poisonous declaration is patently false: Guns kill people. Period. End of riddle. It’s like saying, if I were to beat your brains out with a hammer, the hammer did it. That would be a lie. But promoting lies is nothing new to the liberals like Young. To them, lying to accomplish the “greater good,” as they perceive it, is just fine. The ends justify the means and true or false, right or wrong or good versus evil doesn’t enter into it.
And, so it goes with the propaganda they lay out with regards to George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. The truth is that Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch guy who was watching. Martin attacked Zimmerman and was tragically killed precisely because of the kind of hate that Young foments in his editorial.

Run toward the fight
In the current edition of ESPN Magazine is a full-page ad by America’s Navy. The ad shows a high speed, six-man assault boat going at full speed. The caption in the ad reads: In times of crisis, some run toward the fight. Attorney General Eric Holder’s policy of backing off wouldn’t work here. I wonder if President’s Barack Obama’s Secret Service is picking up Holder’s policy.
Walter J. McCullough
I see that our Republican congressmen have voted to abolish the No Child Left Behind Act. I guess that leaves our governor and state Republicans free to now implement their No Child Left A Dime policy? No problem, I see Congress is also ready to allow more H-1B (foreign white-collar) workers to come to America. It seems they are needed to fill jobs that American citizens aren’t qualified for. Doesn’t a single Republican see the irony here? I would like to think most of this paper’s readers do.
Senator, present facts
Sen. Ted Cruz stated that President Barack Obama ignores the Bill of Rights. I demand to know what he’s talking about. Typical right-wing bluster. No specifics. Just make trash talk. So, come on, senator. Let me hear some facts to support your allegation.
Hailing Lakeway hospital
I want to take this opportunity to let you know how lucky we are to have Lakeway Regional Medical Center in our town. I have been in several hospitals over the years (in three different states), and I have never had such professional and courteous care as I have had here. One of the amazing things is that the food is excellent. Thank you, Lakeway Regional.
