As it exists today, the Travis County personal bond process is a 40-year collaboration of the district attorney, the county attorney, the judiciary, and the defense bar. The Travis County personal bond process saves taxpayers millions of dollars each year in incarceration and prisoner transportation costs. It also prevents millions in new spending from being incurred for additional jail space. These benefits are achieved while respecting all parties involved. The Travis County pretrial process is a model that should be lauded — not ridiculed.
The system in Travis County follows the law and protects the rights of both the accused and the victims. Our personal bond process assures that the judge deciding a particular bond is provided a complete overview of the defendant’s case, including information about assault victims and their wishes, the defendant’s complete criminal history, the defendant’s references, and the exact nature of the charges. This is accomplished using a minimum of judicial resources and reduces costs to taxpayers.
