Rick Hayes, CEO of capital venture firm Waveland Ventures, who unlike dozens of other Austin acquaintances of S. Mark Powell, declined to lend him money. Hayes said he demanded documentation and verification for Powell’s pitch, and Powell didn’t deliver. Powell reportedly left tens of millions in unpaid debts when he died May 16 in an apparent suicide.
