Why tackle redistricting now? Why not allow the court process to continue instead? Simply put: Texans have never embraced federal authorities running their lives. Now is not the time to begin.
Redistricting is the responsibility of the Legislature. The U.S. Constitution makes redistricting the state’s prerogative. The Texas Constitution gives the Legislature the responsibility to redistrict. The Legislature should decide the election maps, not federal judges. Legislative action at this time is even more compelling considering the arguments made by some that the lines drawn last time discriminated against minorities. If true, then the Legislature should act swiftly to remove that tarnish.
