Riding bicycles on state-run tollways, an infrequent occurrence that so far has yielded no cyclist deaths, will now be illegal, the Texas Transportation Commission decided Thursday.
The unanimous vote by the five-member commission, which governs the Texas Department of Transportation and its 80,000-mile system, applies only to tollway main lanes and the adjoining shoulders, not to frontage roads. Although the ban took effect immediately with the vote, TxDOT’s toll operations director Doug Woodall said it would likely be 45 days or more before signs to that effect are in place on TxDOT’s five tollways.
