Appeals erode tax base: A growing number of property owners are using a new legal strategy to challenge their property values for tax purposes, draining an estimated $113 million from public schools and other government entities in Travis County, an American-Statesman review found. Under so-called equity appeals, owners challenge the value of their property compared to the median value of “comparable” properties — a strategy that over time causes an erosion of the tax base.
