A woman who was shot to death Sunday by her ex-boyfriend in Round Rock had broken up with him the night before, her roommate said.
Jonathan DeMarco, 20, killed Sarai Valdez, 23 in front of a duplex on Nicole Circle. Round Rock police officers shot DeMarco to death a short time later after he aimed a gun at them, police said.
Police said Friday they were still investigating the incident and had no new details to release. The officers involved in the shooting remain on administrative duty.
Valdez’s roommate, Iris Carlos, said the morning after Valdez broke up with DeMarco he walked inside the duplex where she and Valdez were living. She said she and Valdez were sleeping in the same bed and a male friend of Valdez’s was sleeping in the living room.
DeMarco got mad that the male friend was there and started fighting with him, Carlos said. She said she pushed DeMarco out the door. Valdez stayed at the duplex the entire day, called her father to wish him a happy Father’s Day and posted pictures of herself on Facebook with the male friend, Carlos said.
DeMarco, who was always jealous of Valdez posting on Facebook, came back several hours later and stood outside the duplex with a gun, Carlos said. Valdez went outside and they started arguing and he shot her, said Carlos.
“I heard her hit the ground,” she said. Carlos, who was standing on the porch when the shooting happened, said she ran back inside and called 911. Then she returned to Valdez’s side.
“As I was walking around her, she made eye contact with me,” Carlos said. “You could see in her eyes that she was gone. I’m just glad his face was not the last one she saw before she left.” When police arrived a few seconds later, Carlos said she heard them yelling at DeMarco to “put the gun down,” before they shot him.
