A man is dead and another is in serious condition after a boating accident Friday night at the Double D Ranch in Rosanky, authorities said Saturday.
Donna Van Gilder, Bastrop County Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace, said John Russell Roy, 54, of Friendswood, died in the accident.
Roy and David Fentress were boating out on a lake at the ranch Friday night when they hit a concrete water intake, Van Gilder said. Roy’s body was recovered after the lake was dragged by a Texas Parks and Wildlife team. Fentress was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with serious injuries after making a long walk back to the ranch’s guest quarters to report the accident, Van Gilder said.
The boat was being inspected by investigators at the Bastrop County’s Sheriff’s Office on Saturday afternoon. Van Gilder said the boat had no lights on it and that there was “evidence of alcohol on the boat.” She said the concrete intake was a few yards offshore.
Van Gilder said the two men were part of a group of five friends from the Houston area who were visiting the Double D, an animal-specialty ranch. She said the other members of the group were back at guest quarters asleep. She said an autopsy would be performed on Roy.
