James Simmons had just gone into the kitchen of his Liberty Hill home for a snack when he heard three gunshots.
He raced outside Monday afternoon to find his 6-year-old grandson, who had been playing in the front yard, with blood on his hands and arms. The blood belonged to his 3-year-old German shepherd, Vinny, a trained therapy dog who visits schools and nursing homes.
