Given that Austin has never hosted two major sporting events on the same day, it wasn’t clear how the city’s network of roads and highways would handle the crush of fans. Nearly 79,000 people attended F1 qualifying at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday and just a shade fewer than 100,000 saw Texas lose to Oklahoma State. The confluence Saturday had generated fears of traffic jams and parking shortages downtown since the conflicting dates were announced a year ago. Neither occurred.
