Michael Norwood was visiting his girlfriend at the hospital on New Year’s Eve, his family said, comforting her as he had been for the past seven days. He told her he was going to go outside for one last smoke before they celebrated the new year.
About 11:50 p.m., Carolyn Norwood called him to wish her 48-year-old son a happy new year, but he did not answer. That’s about the time, police said, that Michael Norwood was shot twice outside of the hospital by a stranger.
