As the Bastrop school district awaits the results of a U.S. Department of Education investigation into allegations of racial discrimination, all school employees will undergo federally sponsored diversity and sensitivity training in the coming months.
The Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is looking into six allegations against Bastrop that range from high school football coaches telling Hispanic players to “run like you’re crossing the border” to complaints that teachers systematically edged minority students out of applying for the National Honor Society.
