Hundreds of Austin-area Filipinos are believed to have family affected by Typhoon Haiyan as many are still trying to reach friends and relatives in the hard-hit province of Cebu.
“We have 45,000 people from the Philippines in the Austin area so we know many are affected,” said Elias Lorenzana, president of the Austin Filipino-American Association. “How many? We don’t know. We are trying to get a head count but can’t until the Philippines government is able to establish communications,” he said.
