Statement: Says that according to a report, “the tech sector now drives more than one-quarter of Austin’s economy.”
The president was referring to a recent report by the Austin Technology Council. We found that the report’s statistics were slightly different from how Obama portrayed them. The report said that the tech sector accounted for 21 percent of Central Texas’ gross regional product; that’s less than the president’s cited percentage. The report said that the tech industry provided 9 percent of the area’s employment. Then again, the report also says jobs in the tech sector plus spin-off jobs amounted to more than one-third of the region’s total jobs, which strikes us as sufficient to make Obama’s claim partly accurate.
