The cost of doing business is going up at courthouses across the state, but especially in Travis County, where civil filing fees are going up $15 to help pay for a new civil courthouse.
The Legislature gave counties the ability to increase those fees earlier this year. Effective Sept. 1, people filing civil and probate suits electronically will pay an extra $20 on top of the $222 regular filing fee. A $5 fee will be added to misdemeanor cases. The extra money, collected by the county clerk, goes to the state to maintain its electronic case-management system.
