Think of the little wood-frame house on Willow Street as an experiment, one that city officials might try to replicate across East Austin in an attempt to counter the powerful economic and social forces at work there.
The house sits in a neighborhood that not too long ago was the poor side of town. But, like much of Central East Austin, Willow Street’s proximity to downtown and Austin’s population boom meant it was bound to be discovered by wealthier, mostly white newcomers, with soaring home prices and rising taxes to follow.
