An estimated 70,000 out of 200,000 Austin utility customers were billed for higher or lower costs than they should have been in recent months.
The city erred on how it charges for wastewater, and roughly 35,000 customers underpaid and 35,000 overpaid, said Carlos Cordova, a spokesman for Austin Energy, which controls the city’s billing system for water, wastewater, electricity and trash pickup. City officials are still figuring out exactly who was affected.
