Austin-area colleges and universities are beefing up security at their graduation ceremonies, citing heightened concerns after national events such as the Boston Marathon bombings.
University President Bill Powers emailed UT students and staff Wednesday morning saying that bags larger than 12 inches would not be allowed inside graduation ceremonies, which are scheduled at various locations on campus on May 17 and 18. Guests at the venues would have their bags and purses searched by security officers, Powers said.
