Lakeway council members voted unanimously this week to put renewal of the portion of city the sales tax that pays for road maintenance on the May ballot.
The election to renew the .25 percent tax is routine. The tax was first passed in 2001, but state law calls for voters to renew the tax every four years. Lakeways residents and visitors pay 8.25 cents on the dollar in sales tax. If voters reject the renewal in May, the sales tax would drop to 8 cents, and the city could lose about $400,000 annually from the sales tax for roads.
