Two Texas Mexican Mafia members have pleaded guilty in a September 2010 homicide case that led to what law enforcement officials have lauded as the largest takedown of the ruthless prison gang in the Austin area.
Johnny Gilbert Soliz Jr., 48, and Nemesio Garcia Jr., 34, were scheduled for trial last week in the death of Walter Capello, a fellow gangster whose body was found in the bed of a pickup after the syndicate suspected he was working as a police informant. But prosecutors said the men instead took plea agreements due to the cooperation of a third co-defendant, Paul Tovar, who they said was willing to testify against the defendants.
