A man who police say was shot and injured after pointing a gun at officers at a Central Austin apartment complex Sunday night has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer.
A friend called 911 at 9:17 p.m. Sunday reporting that 30-year-old Gene Phillip Vela had called him asking for help but hung up before he could ask what Vela needed, officials have said. When police arrived at Vela’s apartment at 2900 Cole Street, near East 30th and Red River streets and close to St. David’s Medical Center, officials said he pointed a gun equipped with a laser through a window at police.
