A federal civil trial beginning this week is expected to deconstruct the night a young black man was killed and another wounded in a widely disputed confrontation with Austin police more than two years ago.
Byron Carter Jr., 20, was a passenger in the car of a teenage friend when officer Nathan Wagner fired at them as they attempted to flee about 11 p.m. on May 30, 2011, according to court records. Authorities said they drove toward the officers. But neither Wagner nor the driver were indicted by a Travis County grand jury and neither have ever spoken of the incident in public.
